Prospering Backyards: A Community-Led Approach to Soil Healing

Soil contamination is a serious issue that can have devastating consequences for human health and the environment. In Los Angeles, the Exide battery recycling plant left a legacy of lead contamination in surrounding neighborhoods, impacting thousands of families.

The Prospering Backyards (Pb) project, a collaboration between community scientists, artists, activists, and trained scientists, offers a community-led approach to soil remediation. This project aims to empower community members to reduce lead exposure while healing their connection to the soil.

Pb's approach is unique in that it focuses on using zeolites, naturally occurring minerals that can trap lead, making it harmless to humans. Through workshops and community engagement, the project has successfully trained community scientists to implement this alternative method in their own backyards.

Key Findings

  • Zeolite treatment significantly reduced bioavailable lead in soil: This is a promising result, as bioavailable lead is the form that is most easily absorbed by the body and poses the greatest health risk.

  • Community scientists played a crucial role: Their involvement ensured that the research addressed the community's needs and concerns.

  • Soil health and biodiversity were important considerations: The project recognized the importance of maintaining a healthy soil ecosystem.

Recommendations

Based on their findings, the Pb team has made several recommendations, including:

  1. Amending soil with zeolites before and after clean-up

  2. Expanding the investigation area

  3. Providing soil testing services for all

  4. Offering educational resources and gardening equipment to affected communities

  5. Engaging with community members in a respectful and human way

Conclusion

The Prospering Backyards project demonstrates the power of community-led science and art to address environmental injustice. By providing accessible and sustainable solutions for soil remediation, Pb is helping to create healthier and more resilient communities.
